愛し largely means love in Japanese.
However, during the ancient Japanese eras, sadness was represented by these two characters.
So then, this means that somewhere along the way, people realise that love is sadness.

Think about it.. What if love; in all its senses, never existed?

Personally, I think that there won't be as much hurt, anger, jealousy, disappointment and other negative feelings/emotions. Because without love, no one would really care for and about anything or anyone else.

There'll be no expectations to miss.
There'll be no despair to speak of, cos we do not base our happiness, even if for a little bit, on love.

Family won't be able to torment you emotionally cos it won't matter to you at all.
Friends won't hurt your feelings, disappoint you and make you sad, intentionally or otherwise.
Lovers... well, if there wasn't such a thing as love, there wouldn't be lovers would there?

I'm not discounting the warmth and feel-good-even-on-the-insides feelings that come with love.
But really, is all that worth the sadness?
